So you start the ski touring season well prepared!

Winter is just around the corner and whether you're a beginner or an advanced skier: if you want to go ski touring, you need the right equipment and technique as well as a good level of fitness. Our Hagan Ambassador Rene Antmann (alias innsbruckalps) talks about his traditions at the start of the season and about the basics and equipment checklist for a successful start to the season.

As touring is primarily an endurance sport, basic training plays an important role. The aim is to improve basic endurance in particular, in which the body works purely aerobically, i.e. the oxygen absorbed is sufficient to convert the energy stored in the body. With anaerobic exercise, the oxygen taken in would not be enough to supply the muscles and energy balance sufficiently well.

Theoretically, you could go on indefinitely during aerobic exercise with the right amount of food and fluids (blisters on your feet etc. not included). The basic rule is: you should be able to talk to each other without any problems and you will not become significantly more tired towards the end of the exercise.

Of course, it helps to have already laid a solid foundation on the road bike, running or similar endurance sports in the summer in order to be able to start successfully in the following touring season. However, it is never too late to work on your endurance to achieve the desired goals.

You should pay attention to this at the start of the season:

As a rule of thumb: only those who train slowly will be able to build up a solid foundation for the winter. Endurance training should be carried out at a maximum of 70 percent of the maximum heart rate, i.e. below the aerobic threshold. During this so-called "fat metabolism training", the basis of basic training, the body learns to obtain its energy primarily from our body's existing fat reserves.

It is much easier for the body to draw energy from the limited carbohydrate stores available. However, the aim of an endurance athlete is to optimize fat burning in order to improve basic endurance performance at the important aerobic threshold. The following therefore applies: If your performance at the aerobic threshold is high, you also increase your speed when touring at the anaerobic threshold. Which means nothing other than that your success - whether over 500 meters of altitude on the slopes or on long, enduring 2000-meter ski tours in the backcountry.

Furthermore, in early winter in particular, it is important to focus on a clean technique! During the first few vertical meters on the snow, pay particular attention to "pulling" the skis cleanly and concentrating on a rhythmic stride. I also like to incorporate hairpin bends or difficult passages right next to the piste.

These simple tips are the key to easy ascents and fun on touring skis and a solid start to the winter.

The equipment also plays an important role

The heavier your touring skis, bindings and touring boots are, the more strength and effort it takes to climb. And the harder it is to keep your heart rate in the low-intensity range.

Unfortunately, beginners in particular are often talked into a cheaper and heavier ski with second-rate bindings. The argument: this setup is easier to ski. That may be true, but most of the tour is made up of the ascent. And if you arrive at the summit completely exhausted, you won't have any energy left for the descent.

The skis in the HAGAN Core series cover a broad spectrum, are easy to climb, have excellent handling characteristics and are also ideal for touring beginners. Combined with a pin binding such as a PURE or PINUP, they are perfect for beginners and advanced skiers. For the very advanced and professional skiers among you, all skis in the ULTRA series are suitable for your desired level waist with.

Start with dry training

Motivated, we set off on the first ski tour of the year, but who hasn't experienced this before?

  • What was that again about changing the binding from walk to ski?
  • Will my ski boot still fit in the binding?
  • Where and how must the skin be installed correctly?
  • And many more questions!

Especially at the start of the season, when we are on a mountain or even a summit for the first time, there are once again many problems in the way, even for us professionals.

On a rainy November day, I like to spread out all my equipment in the living room and use it as if I were going on a ski tour. Are any parts still missing? Are there any broken items from the previous season or do they need to be repaired? Then I now have enough time to replace them before the first tour.

But you can also practise your technique and the correct handling of the material without freezing your fingers.

Don't forget to respect nature and enjoy the beauty of the mountains, I wish you lots of fun in the snow and a successful start to the season!
